CHAP 3
‘Tenara’
As Elizabeth rubbed her eyes and rid them of the burning which the blinding light had so generously given them, she looked up slowly and gazed into the face of…well, she didn’t quite know. It had the appearance of a young girl, only it had long pointed ears, and they weren't on the side of its head like one would imagine but rather on the top. It had unnaturally long black hair infested with small star-like sparkles which made it look almost blue in the sunlight.
The girl (for it was most like a girl than anything lese) also had large green eyes which slanted upward, like a cat’s; and a long narrow face with a straight and admirable nose.
There was a silver eight pointed star on the left cheek and rosy lips which smiled slightly as they spoke “Do not be afraid…I mean you no ill will”. Elizabeth found her courage now. Staggering, but courage nonetheless, “Stay away!” She yelled in a quaking voice as she snatched up a nearby fallen branch, “or I’ll make venison stew out of you!”
The girl laughed softly and sweetly. Elizabeth noted the shining teeth which were revealed in the process and which actually resembled white pearls than teeth in reality. “I’m not a deer” replied the girl gently; still smiling as she spoke “That was merely a trick of the eye”.
“Trick?” asked Elizabeth, still shaken “What do you mean? What are you?!”
“What am I?”
“Yes!”
“Yes what?”
“Yes, what are you?!”
“My name is Tenara”
“I asked what you are, not what your name is!”
Elizabeth Sheers, as the reader may have noticed by her words and tone, had become quite angry, and even frustrated with the events of the day. She was growing very impatient with her visitor.
“You are very spirited” said the girl who now sat down on some moss and began to finger a leaf, “I am a Tazmanian”. Elizabeth, now satisfied with the answer to her question, even though she did not understand it, now studied the clothes of her new acquaintance. A long green robe covered most of the girl’s thin body from the thighs up. Darker colored pants enclosed the girl’s legs, which were crossed as he sat. Her sleeves, which came a little past the elbow, were slit up the side and thus revealed the girl’s smooth arms.
At once, Elizabeth saw it; A silver tattoo-like thing, on the girl’s right arm. It had the shape of a serpent, coiled around her bicep. In color, it matched the eight pointed star on the girl’s, or Tenara’s (for this was what she claimed her name was) left cheek.
“Where do you come from?” Elizabeth spoke again. “And what do you want?” In her dazed mind, Elizabeth believed she was merely in a dream. A dream she was unable to escape from; an unending vault which consumed her and would not free her from its pit.
“I come from Tazmania” replied the strange girl “I told you I was a Tazmanian. As for wanting…I want nothing of you, nor anyone else in this odd world of yours”. Elizabeth was bewildered. “What…what do you mean? Why are you here? And where is…Tazmania?”
The visitor laughed again “You have many questions, stranger. I came here to free myself from the pains of reality…to rest my mind and ease my suffering. And to answer your last question…Tazmania is not a location. From here, I have no idea where it lies”.
These answers only confused Elizabeth to a fuller extent. “Well, if you don’t know where it is…does that mean you can’t, I mean…you’re not leaving?”
The sun was at its highest point in the sky and grey clouds were moving briskly. A storm was approaching, and the once bright sun soon faded away behind the threatening darkness of the wrath of Mother Nature.
“There is no time for talk” said Tenara, now standing up with ease and taking Elizabeth by the hand, “Come, I smell rain”.
